At its regularly-scheduled meeting last night, the Littleton Building Board of Appeals voted unanimously to stay, or halt, the current appeal of a home under a demolition order, located at 7874 S. Windermere Circle. The homeowner appellant was not present at the meeting. The city’s code enforcement officials will move forward with a new case that will take into account the more dangerous condition of the house as a result of the fire. City code allows for repair, rehabilitation, or demolition of a dangerous structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by South Metro Fire Rescue.
South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) responded to a house fire at 6:15 a.m. this morning at 7874 South Windermere Circle. The home has significant damage but there were no injuries. The cause is unknown at this time and is under investigation by SMFR marshals and Littleton Police detectives. This home has been the subject of numerous violations of municipal code. In May of 2018, code enforcement officers inspected the home after receiving a right-of-entry search warrant from a municipal judge to check the current condition. The home was determined to be uninhabitable and an order was issued to bring it to a state of good repair. The property owner was initially unresponsive but eventually was granted extensions by the city to make corrections to the property. He failed to make the corrections and in November of 2018, a final notice and order to demolish was issued. The property owner appealed the order to the Building Board of Appeals. The first hearing on December 19 was continued to January 16 at the property owner’s request. That hearing lasted over four hours and was continued to January 30 to receive more witness testimony. That hearing was continued to February 6 due to a conflict with a city witness. The property owner notified the city he could not attend that meeting and it was continued to March 7. The property owner notified the city shortly before that meeting he could not attend. That meeting was continued to March 20. The Building Board of Appeals will be advised by its attorney at that meeting on how to proceed in light of the fire.
